In December 2022, Kamuthe Wildlife Conservancy launched a groundbreaking borehole project.

The borehole launched in collaboration with the Kenya Wildlife Services and the Elephant Cooperation marks a crucial milestone in enhancing the quality of life for the local population.

For years, Kamuthe and its neighbouring areas have grappled with an acute lack of accessible water sources. Piped water remains a distant dream for many, restricted to many.

The majority of residents have been forced to rely on shallow wells and seasonal waterways known as laghas, resulting in more than half of the local population struggling to secure clean and safe water.

The situation becomes especially dire during the harsh dry seasons when people and their livestock are compelled to traverse great distances in search of water.

The newly launched borehole is a significant step towards addressing the chronic water shortage plaguing the Kamuthe region. It promises to be a more dependable water source for the residents of the area, providing much-needed relief to over 50 households and their livestock.

It is the hope of Kamuthe Wildlife Conservancy that this will be the first of many similar projects under the Conservancy’s livelihoods programme.
